Power factor testing and dissipation factor testing have long been considered synonymous as they both refer to AC dielectric loss testing. PF(Power factor) and DF(Dissipation factor) are just two of several measurable properties that can be obtained from AC dielectric loss tests used to assess the condition of insulation systems.
Both power factor testing and dissipation factor testing are effective at finding electrical insulation weaknesses and hazards in electrical equipment before failure is imminent. PF and DF tests can measure dielectric loss, capacitance and AC resistance of electrical equipment insulation.
These tests measure the presence of a bad insulation even though there may be a good insulation in series with a bad insulation. These tests provide information on the overall condition of the insulation at a ratio independent of the insulation volume being tested (i.e. the insulation's PF or DF value).
In addition, they provide insulation evaluation at normal frequency (60 Hz or 50 Hz) operating conditions, independent of time. PF and DF tests do not overstress the insulation and can be compared to previous year's test results or those of similar equipment to determine if the insulation is slowly degrading.
